Assistant Principals: Roles & Responsibilities
Leadership & Learning: The Administrative Framework
With a diverse student body of over 800 students—including 20% in Special Education and 10% English Language Learners (ELL)—and a dedicated staff of over 100 individuals, our leadership team manages a complex and rewarding environment daily.
Our administrative structure is built around the three tiers of the instructional core:
1. Instructional Practice
Setting the vision for academic excellence and monitoring its daily implementation.
The Principal establishes the academic vision by synthesizing guidance from the district, state and national standards, and feedback from teachers, parents, and community leaders. The Assistant Principals (APs) serve as the primary monitors of this vision through the following lenses:
STEM & Middle School Readiness
Our Assistant Principals focus specifically on Mathematics and Science across all grade levels.
-
Direct Instruction: They maintain a presence in the classroom as a teacher of record to remain grounded in the student experience.
-
High School Prep: They work with K to 8th-grade teams to ensure a Problem-Based Learning focus, preparing students for elite secondary education.
-
Teacher Support: They monitor the planning and implementation of Inquiry and Experimentation, Problem-Based Learning, and Student-led Classroom models that focus on helping students
Literacy & Diverse Learner Support
One AP serves as the Literacy Specialist and advocate for specialized populations.
-
Compliance: Ensures procedural safeguards and deadlines for ELL and Diverse Learner programs are strictly met.
-
Primary Education: Oversees instructional practices and lesson planning for Grades K-2.
-
Coaching: Supports teachers in integrating reading, writing, listening, and speaking across all subject areas.
Evaluation Metric: The administrative team conducts over 130 annual evaluations. Each evaluation requires 5–7 hours of work, including pre/post-meetings, classroom observations, and comprehensive data analysis.
2. Student Supports
Fostering social-emotional growth and a safe school climate.
Beyond academics, our APs are deeply embedded in the daily lives of our students to ensure a supportive environment:
Ensuring the logistical and fiscal health of the school.
Our Assistant Principals are intimately involved in the "business" side of education to ensure teachers have the resources they need:
-
Fiscal Oversight: APs assist in creating and monitoring the annual budget and reviewing monthly budget lines.
-
Resource Procurement: Collaborating with teachers to identify, evaluate, and order instructional materials.
-
Site Safety: Administrators lead morning arrival and afternoon dismissal to ensure student safety.
-
Community Engagement: Presence at evening meetings (LSC, PTA, Parent Organizations) often extending until 6:00 PM or later.
-
Human Resources: Managing employee relations, interviewing/hiring, and addressing parent concerns.
Our Philosophy: Leadership Development
I view the role of the Principal as a developer of talent. I prioritize hiring Assistant Principals who aspire to lead their own schools one day. By involving them in every major decision and allowing them to navigate difficult judgment calls, we ensure the next generation of school leaders is battle-tested, empathetic, and prepared.
Our APs share in both the struggles and the rewards of leadership, ensuring our school remains a place of growth for everyone—students and staff alike.
Sincerely,
Efren Toledo
Principal
